I've got an '88 and mine does that every now and then. One time I had the same symptoms. I went on reserve, headed to the gas station, and it took less than a gallon to fill it up. I thought the problem might be something clogging the vent in the fuel cap and creating a vacuum in the tank. I went to a friend who has an air compressor and carefully blew air throught the vents. That seemed to work but I'm not sure if that was the problem. Good luck with it!
